Record Label: n/a
HOME BASE: Messina, Italy
GENRE: I think Jazz. My music is really based on improvisation: the most important thing. I’m interested in very clear instantaneous compositions, that have a strong structure and a good melody – something evocative. When I play, I want to tell a beautiful story.
CATEGORY ENTERED: Tribute Album
WORK SUBMITTED: At Home With Zindars
LABEL: Luciano Troja
INFLUENCES: Bill Evans, Fred Hersch, Steely Dan, Johann Sebastian Bach
DESCRIBE YOUR NOMINATED WORK: It is an intimate piano solo journey inside the music and the world of jazz and classical composer Earl Zindars (Chicago 1927-San Francisco 2005). He is well-known for the close friendship and musical empathy with the legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans, who played and recorded his compositions along the entire musical career. In my CD, there are fourteen Earl Zindars songs – some of them never released before – and my own composition titled “Earl and Bill.”
The album is the result of a long, patient work five years in the making, through New York City, where the CD has been recorded, Messina (Italy) for the post-production, and San Francisco where I met Zindars’ family.
The composer’s wife Anne, singer and composer, co-author of many songs (“How My Heart Sings”); his daughters Helene, a renowned soprano, and Karen, who had an important run as a classical dancer. They have been very helpful and loving with me to deepen the personality of Earl Zindars. The CD is accompanied by a booklet about the world and life of the composer.
The album contains also “Roses For Annig” the final Zindars piece composed less than a month before he passed away, dedicated to his beloved wife for 43 years.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SUBMIT TO THE IMA’s? Because I think The IMA’s fits my work perfectly. It comes only by personal choices, without any pressure, totally independent in its spirit and its destination.
WERE THERE ANY “HAPPY ACCIDENTS” IN THE STUDIO ? Everything went better than planned.
DID FANS HELP YOU FUND THIS PROJECT? In the years I have had many fans for this project. Of course they helped me with their encouragement and their lovely support.
WHO’S SITTING IN YOUR AUDIENCE? My wife, my mom, Zindars family, the staff of the project, my friends, my fans.
WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? The desire to research the beauty and a quiet positive, spiritual energy
ARE THERE ANY SONGS YOU WISH YOU WROTE? Any Cole Porter or George Gershwin songs
WHAT ARTISTS ARE YOU LISTENING TO THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? Barry White…but I don’t think that it is a great surprise.
WHAT ARE YOUR GUILTY PLEASURES ON THE ROAD? Chocolate and strawberries
ANY CLOSE CALLS OR MISHAPS WHILE ON TOUR? During a gig with my first band, a child threw a firecracker on my keyboard. I thought my keyboard was exploding!
DO YOU HAVE ANY RITUALS BEFORE YOU GO ON STAGE? I have a lot of rituals, but I cannot reveal them!
SHOULD MUSIC BE FREE? In general I think not, but sometimes it could be free for special events or special projects.
HOW HAS DIGITAL AFFECTED YOUR CAREER? Some years ago I recorded a CD in duo (piano-guitar) simply with a mini-disc. It was a spontaneous session in a theatre, a couple of hours before the show. The CD has been released and recognized world-wide. Without digital it was impossible.
ARE DIGITAL SINGLES VS. FULL ALBUMS THE FUTURE OF MUSIC? I think both.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… necessary. If done correctly, it can also be in a little part of independent productions made only for the beauty.
