WHAT’S THE MEANING OF YOUR BAND NAME? All my groups are under my name to represent my vision.
DESCRIBE YOUR NOMINATED WORK: Organ Jazz, combining R&B, gospel, straight ahead jazz, funk and blues
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SUBMIT THIS WORK TO THE 10TH IMA’S? The IMA’s represent the voice of the working artists and the voice of the fans. To be singled out by this group of people for the work I’ve done is truly an honor.
DID YOU USE ANY UNUSUAL EFFECTS OR INSTRUMENTS IN THIS RECORDING? We used a B-3 organ, if you call that unusual.
WERE THERE ANY HAPPY ACCIDENTS WHILE IN THE STUDIO, OR DID EVERYTHING GO AS PLANNED? There were 2 happy accidents: 1. Lenny White showed up and wanted to play. 2. Delbert McClinton showed up and wanted to play.
DID FANS HELP YOU FUND THIS PROJECT? This project was funded by Owl Studios, but really, any fan that shows up to a gig or buys my album funds what I do!
WHO’S SITTING IN YOUR AUDIENCE? A diverse audience of people who like jazz, funk, blues and R&B, all ages!
WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? The fact that they love jazz music, which is America’s only real art form, but not the most popular music. So they go out of their way to find me and hear me play. The other night, for example, Cornel West came to see me play! He’s been a fan of mine for years and years!
ARE THERE ANY SONGS YOU WISH YOU WROTE? “Gingerbread Boy,” “Cry Me A River,” “Cold Sweat”
WHAT ARTISTS ARE YOU LISTENING TO THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? I don’t think any of the artists I listen to would surprise my fans… Big Maybelle, might be surprising. I’m pretty much what I am.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM SHOW LINEUP? My dream show lineup, I’ve already played with. Wallace Rooney, Rob Dixon, Donald Harrison, Christian Scott and Antonio Farao (Piano)
WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE ON THE ROAD? Having dinner and expensive wines with my friends in different towns all over the world.
ANY CLOSE CALLS OR MISHAPS WHILE ON TOUR? The car wreck in Siberia a few months ago. A giant logging truck struck our van right where I was sitting. The whole band walked off without a scratch. http://blog.owlstudios.com/blog/mike-clark/mike-clark-russia-tour-update-v1
DO YOU HAVE ANY RITUALS BEFORE YOU GO ON STAGE? I’m a Nichiren Buddhist, taught to me by Herbie Hancock while I was in his band in the 70’s. Before I go on stage I chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo for as long as I can so that I play a very focused set and to reach the hearts of the people.
SHOULD MUSIC BE FREE? I feel that artists should be free to communicate their message to each other and to the audience. If I like what I’m feeling, the audience is going to like it. If the band likes what they are feeling, the audience is going to like it.
HOW HAS DIGITAL AFFECTED YOUR CAREER? Being a jazz artist, I keep pushing forward to break my own boundaries and limitations, so I’m not sure if it’s affected me at all. Believing in the law of cause and effect, I’m sure it’s affected me in some way, I’m just not sure how.
ARE DIGITAL SINGLES VS. FULL ALBUMS THE FUTURE OF MUSIC? I have no idea.
ARE DIGITAL SINGLES VS. FULL ALBUMS THE FUTURE OF MUSIC… constantly in flux.
