What’s the meaning of your band name? There isn’t any real meaning, it’s just something I heard on a commercial in high school. Years later, when I found myself without a band again, I went back to it out of laziness. I probably should’ve put more effort into coming up with a new name.
Describe your nominated work: It’s a fun song that we’ve been playing for a long time and has become a crowd favorite. It’s mainly about how short life is and how important it is to truly live.
Why did you choose to submit this work to The 10th IMA’s? I guess we felt like it was a strong single because of the crowd reactions that we get from it.
Did you use any unusual effects or instruments in this recording?: Everyone loves when Tommy plays the melodica.
Were there any happy accidents while in the studio, or did everything go as planned? Everything went more or less as planned.
Did fans help you fund this project? I believe we did do presales of the album while we were still recording it to help grease the wheels financially, so yes.
Who’s sitting in your audience? Really smart, funny, and attractive people.
What makes your fans unique? Most of them have 6 fingers on either hand.
Are there any songs you wish you wrote? “Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy” by Queen, “Mr. Blue Sky” By ELO, “Old Man” by Neil Young, “Good Vibrations” by The Beach Boys, “Long Long Long” by The Beatles.
What artists are you listening to that would surprise your fans? I’ve really been enjoying that B.O.B. record.
What is your dream show lineup? Opening for Chumbawumba or the Baha Men
What is your guilty pleasure on the road? Top 40 Nashville country radio and gas station roller food items
Any close calls or mishaps while on tour? Wrecked van / drummer molested by roller girls / van broken into.
Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? We usually break open a chicken’s ribcage, then throw its bones into a large bowl with a mixture of the chickens blood and all of our blood. We swish it around a bit and then we interpret the bones to know whether or not it will be a good show.
Should music be free? Well, it probably shouldn’t be, but it’s the way things are. You can either try to be innovative and make it work for you or you can cry about it. We have found the former to be more productive than the latter.
How has digital affected your career? It has bridged the gap between artist and fan and helped build communities of substance around art (and it keeps those communities informed).
Are digital singles vs. full albums the future of music? I am very much on the side of full albums. To me, full albums are far more satisfying. A single is like a sentence, a full album is a conversation.
Finish this sentence: The music industry is… like watching a beautiful ship sink.
