What’s the meaning of your band name? During the civil war, soldiers were often farmers. Many did not know their left from right, so to teach them to march, hay was tied to their left foot, straw to their right. They would call out hay foot, straw foot to teach them to march. It’s symbolic of marching forward. There were never any other contenders.

Describe your nominated work: Hole is a song dedicated to those that are too big for their britches, a song about putting people in check.

Why did you choose to submit this work to The 10th IMA’s? Strong lyrics, catchy tune

Did you use any unusual effects or instruments in this recording? Nothing out of the ordinary, unless you consider a banjo player out of the ordinary.

Were there any happy accidents while in the studio, or did everything go as planned? This was a fairly straightforward composition; it went as planned, save for the organic evolution that happens when playing and working on a song for an extended period of time.

Did fans help you fund this project? Our album was completely funded through our show and merchandise sales, so it is completely fan funded

Who’s sitting in your audience? We have a varied audience ranging from depressed high school kids to happy senior citizens—and everything in-between. They pretty much all love bourbon.

What makes your fans unique? They are dedicated and support us more than we could hope…and they really, really love bourbon.

Are there any songs you wish you wrote? There are far too many great songs to list.

What artists are you listening to that would surprise your fans? I have been on an exclusive jazz vinyl kick for months. I listen to a lot of Ella Fitzgerald

What is your dream show lineup? Slim Cessna, Murder by Death, Strawfoot, Woven Hand

What are your guilty pleasures on the road? All of our pleasures leave us feeling a little guilty. Our bass player has a tendency to buy oversized donuts shaped like feet.

Any close calls or mishaps while on tour? My band once left me at an out-of-town venue. I had to find an alternate route home.

Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? Does bourbon count?

Should music be free? yes

How has digital affected your career? It has made us more accessible

Are digital singles vs. full albums the future of music? I believe digital singles is where we’re moving, thanks to the immediate accessibility

Finish this sentence: The music industry is… less an industry now, and more community.
