NAME OF ALBUM NOMINATED SONG IS ON: Dragon Chinese Cocktail Horoscope
DESCRIBE THE STORY BEHIND THIS SONG: We went to a weird wedding-a friend of a friend- and this song started off being about that.
WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS TRACK TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAs? It’s acoustic.
WAS THIS ALWAYS INTENDED AS AN ACOUSTIC TUNE OR IS THIS RE-WORKED? It was originally written on piano, but recording it that way didn’t fit. So I guess it is reworked.
WHAT UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS OR TECHNIQUES DID YOU USE ON THIS ALBUM? We recorded this on tape, and for some of the background sounds, we slowed the tape down to 1/8 speed and had someone play a clavinova along with the track. Played back at regular speed, those sounds are high and distant sounding. We also used a broken wurlitzer for the tiny solo in the middle. It was unplugged, the mic was on the tynes, and we overlapped two takes.
WHAT’S THE SECRET TO MAKING ACOUSTIC SONGS STAND OUT? I don’t know.
DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT? No.
DESCRIBE YOUR AUDIENCE: Interesting and interested!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY? In San Francisco: Cafe du Nord, The Independent, Swedish American Hall, Great American Music Hall. Elsewhere: Tractor Tavern in Seattle, Double Door in Chicago, Mercury Lounge in New York.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST EXCITING MOMENT TO DATE? We had some astonishing cheese steaks in Philadelphia, but probably it was playing some shows with Iron and Wine and the Fruit Bats. Or, meeting Al Franken in a hotel lobby. He was very down-to-earth.
WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR 2010?: A new record of collaboration-songs with American poets. That is just being finished now. Also, writing songs for a next proper album.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS….. very self-involved.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Being excellent, staying vital and productive, having your home team win the World Series some day.
WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? Justin Timberlake, John Denver, Anton Webern, Richard Youngs, Barry Manilow, Jorge Cafrune, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and one Kenny G song I listen to for intellectual exercise.
NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU’RE CHAMPIONING: I like Exray’s, Scott Pinkmountain, Charles Atlas, Christine Fellows, Fair and Kind, and always the Silver Jews.
