HOW DID YOU BEGIN PLAYING MUSIC TOGETHER?
The Garlics were all going the same high-school. Olivier, Will and May were playing in the school’s orchestra. Will was playing bass, Olivier the guitar and May was playing flute. May was composing songs and was giving concerts at the school, as long as we can remember she was participating in all activities possible. (Note that she was co-president of the high school and pretty much involved in everything, and we mean everything!) Olivier and Will were playing in another band with another singer and drummer at that same high school. Jeff, was playing with his friends and was from time to time playing with some other people. He played everything from trumpets, to violin, to guitar, and drums. Up until the last year of high school, the four never played together.

In January 2009, Will, Olivier and Joel (the ex-singer of the band) registered themselves in a contest, “Exposure Music Festival ‘09” at Club Soda in Montreal. Five weeks before the date of their appearance, Will ask May if she could join them to do the show as they were missing a female voice and ask Jeff to replace the drummer that had just quit the band, and of course May and Jeff agreed. For five weeks, they merged all materials, taking one song from the original band and one original song of May’s. Five weeks before the beginning of the show Joel decided to leave the band, leaving May as the lead-singer.

Come day of the show, astonishingly, the band did more than well and finished second in the contest and distinguishing themselves from 60 other selected bands. They were absolutely amazing and you can see their performance on Youtube. May was 16 years old and the boys were only 17.

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR BAND NAME?
The Garlics was the original name for the band. It’s a way of saying a name is just a name and it doesn’t mean anything. It’s what you do with it that makes the difference. 🙂

DESCRIBE YOUR LATEST RELEASE.
We just launched a full length self titled album that is available on iTunes, Numusix.com, Amazon, etc, Our current singles are “Goodbye” and “Without” you, we have music video’s for both those out!

DID YOU USE ANY UNUSUAL INTRUMENTS OR EFFECTS?
Not really, it is clean music with basic instruments but it’s something we are planning for our next album; we are actually working on it as we are typing the answers to this interview!

WERE THERE ANY ‘HAPPY ACCIDENTS’ IN THE STUDIO?
Everything was planned. We didn’t have much money to produce so we were very serious about it. So what you hear was all what was expected. 🙂

DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT?
No. It was UndergroundMusix (producers of our last album) that funded everything.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SUBMIT THESE RELEASES TO THE 10TH IMAS?
We were looking for ways to promote The Garlics and we found Numusix.com and Jango.com. One day, we wrote them to ask if they were a credible place or contest to be part of to get heard and the name came up. So we registered ourselves and hope to do well.

HOW DOES THE DESIGN OF YOUR ALBUM ART AND MERCHANDISE VISUALLY SUPPORT YOUR MUSIC?
We are very proud of our album. It was done by Generation in Montreal. The logo they did with such a bizarre name was amazing, four garlics cloves that makes a kind of a star motif. It was us. Humble, coming from nowhere, no money, and yet when you combine all the elements, it becomes something amazing. 🙂

WHAT IS YOUR MUSIC VIDEO ABOUT?
For “Goodbye,” it’s a simple story about unhealthy relationships and the courage to say Goodbye to them. Basically saying that you are a person that has the right to choose to be respected and free.
“Without you” is simple. May wrote a song about a girl she didn’t get along with…their situation still hasn’t changed!

WHO DIRECTED YOUR VIDEO AND HOW DID THEY AFFECT YOUR VISION?
The concept was created by May and the video was directed by Matt Dorion, who was so kind with us. He took the time to listen to our ideas, looked at the rudimentary storyboard and played around. It went smooth and easy. Matt directed several videos in the states and we had the chance to meet him through May’s Dad.

HOW DID YOU DEVELOP THE STORY LINE?
Basically the music video “Goodbye” comes from Will’s experience, May wrote about it. Then it was visually transformed into observations of people and their unhealthy relationships. So we decided to portrait three personality types: Olivier guitar plays a guy who is so introverted he is not capable of expressing himself, Will plays a guy with an unfaithful girlfriend, JF plays a guy who is harassed by his girlfriend, and May was the narrator.

WHAT WAS THE BUDGET?
Aaaaahh, not much. In all it cost us 1K per video. That’s all we had, that’s all we used. 😉

DESCRIBE THE FILMING PROCESS OF YOUR VIDEO.
We chose an old factory where they were a lot of antiques. We created sets with what was there we needed four decors, one decor for each scenario. Matt listened to us than took control, defining what we were shooting and in what order. In each scene we were singing with the iPod and playing the song entirely. We shot each little scenario one by one.

WHO IS SITTING IN YOUR AUDIENCE?
The audience we have is amazing. We have young kids that come to outdoor shows wearing The Garlics t-shirt along side 40 years olds that want to rock and have fun. But most are between 15 and 30.

WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE?
They are simple people, healthy people, and happy people. We don’t take ourselves seriously, yet we are serious at what we are doing. We love, literally love people and they feel it. They are unique because they are normal people who want to have fun and relax.

WHAT IS THE WILDEST THING A FAN HAS EVER DONE FOR YOU?
Well, we receive lots of emails. One decided that we should be at David Letterman show and is actually contacting everyone he can to have us there. Others want to have an autograph… Most of them are just people who like to have fun, so there is nothing extreme…yet. 🙂

WHAT DO YOU COLLECT?
Mostly hockey cards for the guys and Plush characters for May.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE?
The release of our first album for sure! We put a lot of work and heart into it!

ARE THERE ANY SONGS YOU WISH YOU WROTE?
It would probably be those songs : Let It Be (Beatles), Breathe Me (Sia), Jar Of Hearts (Christina Perri), Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd) and Stairway To Heaven (Led Zeppelin). They are so many good songs that it’s really difficult to chose only a few ones !

NAME 3 INGREDIENTS FOR A KILLER SHOW.
Chemistry between band mates, lots of energy, and lots of love for the people who are listening.

WHAT ARTISTS ARE YOU LISTENING TO THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS?
We all have different styles of music, but it would be Charles Aznavour for Olivier, Jon Lajoie for Jeff, John Mayer for May and Tryo for Will.

NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU ARE CHAMPIONING.
Mostly Paramore, Rise Against and Sum 41.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… changing. Like dinosaurs if we don’t change we will disappear. So we need to evolve and redefine the industry ourselves. We have to stop waiting for others and do what we have to do.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN THE WORKS?
An album, we will be in studio very soon! Playing some shows all around Canada and in North East of the US, connecting with more fans, and meeting more bands- so we’ll be able to play in other towns and countries.

HOW CAN FANS FOLLOW YOU?
On iTunes, on NuMusix.com, Youtube and thegarlicsmusic.com for our music! Also on Twitter, Myspace, Facebook and Jango.com, if you wanna follow us personally.

Great songwriting, great melodies… Frankly surprising from people so young!
