DESCRIBE YOUR LATEST RELEASE: Richie’s Barnyard – out of the ordinary there’s something distinctive about the Arkestra’s sound, modern jazz with astral noises attached, bass clarinets and trombones wail and soar in rhapsodic freedom…. or as Richie Beirach would call it: “Barnyard shit!”
DID YOU USE ANY UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS OR EFFECTS? The instruments are all acoustic except rhodes and nord lead synth. The nord lead is a analog synthesizer which I use to create sound designs – music example: Gargyoles (Richie’s Barnyard) www.myspace.com/bncarkestra
WERE THERE ANY ‘HAPPY ACCIDENTS’ IN THE STUDIO OR DID YOU RECORD IT AS PLANNED? Richie shared some insides to the songs we recorded at the studio – the concept for the horn section during “solos” was to create free, spontaneous background designs. During this session everything came together that we have worked for during our tour up to the studio sessions in Leipzig (DE) November 2010. Space is the Place –
HOW WAS THIS PROJECT FUNDED? We are fortunate to be funded by the town of Biel/Bienne and the state of Berne.
WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR BAND NAME? Bienne City (BNC) is the city we live in – an orchestra for a vibrant culturally active community.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SUBMIT TO THE 11TH IMAS? The Bienne City (BNC) Arkestra would like to reach out to new fans and create more exposure for “Richie’s Barnyard”.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? There were several great performances in the past such as a concert at the Vilnius Jazz Festival 2011 last year – in addition some of the awards I have received during my career – for example: Chrysler Jazz Award for best band at the Montreux Jazz Festival 2000 / Billboard Song Contest Winner (Excellence in Songwriting Award) in 2006.
But most memorable are the times I work(ed) with jazz artists such as Chico Freeman, Doug Weiss, George Garzone, Richie Beirach and others.
WHO IS SITTING IN YOUR AUDIENCE? WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? Our fans are friends of contemporary music first – they are unique in their willingness to expand – the audience is a diverse group of all ages, including young and seasoned musicians, painters, DJ’s etc.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST/CRAZIEST TOUR STORY? When our band dog came on stage during a concert and bit the soloist in the foot – the dog possibly didn’t appreciate what was performed…..
HAVE YOU EVER HUNG OUT WITH ONE OF YOUR MUSICAL HEROES? WHAT’S THE STORY? Due to my studies in Europe and NYC I have been blessed to meet and collaborate with amazing musicians – such as Richie Beirach (Richie’s Barnyard) who as helped me to simplify forms and structures but most importantly to believe in ones ability.
ARE THERE ANY SONGS YOU WISH YOU WROTE? Other question – what can be still written in the future?
WHAT ARTISTS ARE YOU LISTENING TO THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? George Benson, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Sade….
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM SHOW LINEUP? Bienne City (BNC) Arkestra – it is important to surround oneself with musicians that are “speaking the same language”.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS…Born to be Wild
